The street will become a stage, and the man on the road, the front-row audience. The curtains are set to rise on the fifth Street Theatre Festival, organised by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, and the eight participating directors are ready with storylines that are,in most cases, drawn from the lives of the audience.

This year, eight plays will be presented from July 14 to 17 at Kaimbwala,Khuda,Lahora,Ramdarbar,Manimajra,Dadumajra,Maloya and Burail, with the themes ranging from drug menace and unemployment to corruption and AIDS.

“The idea is to present plays that are entertaining, yet talk of socially relevant issues. The performance evokes an immediate response,’’ says Kamal Tewari, chairperson of the Akademi, adding that a street theatre festival attracts an audience that does not, otherwise, attend plays in halls. Screecher spirits.

The challenge of entertaining an active audience on the street can be heady. “When you perform in an auditorium, you are catering to a certain class of audience. But in a nukkad natak, your reach is amazing,as is the immediate response and reaction of the audience,” says Chakresh Kumar, who is presenting Gagan Da Mama Bajiyo,a play that focuses on ideologies of Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi. Another play,on social awareness,is called Jab Jago Tabhi Savera.

Directors Rajeev Mehta and Gaurav Sharma say that they cannot stay away from presenting nukkad natak. In fact, all eight directors staging their plays as part of this festival have been performing street theatre in the cities and villages of Punjab for decades. “Street theatre is a tool for change and communication,” says Sahib Singh, who will present his play Samaj,on issues related to women.

“Street theatre goes beyond performance. We give space to our audience to share their concerns, let them step on stage to change a part of the action,or share their story with us. I wish the government would use the medium of street theatre to understand the problems of rural areas,” says Kumar.

Like every other day, I woke up on the right side of the bed and the first thing I did was to turn on the computer as I usually do. Like every other day, I opened my inbox and found many emails waiting for my attention. I brushed my teeth, spent some time on that same old treadmill and had a serve of the familiar breakfast. Everything went almost the same way that it goes every day. Even if I do not wish to make predictions about the rest of this day, still it will not be surprising if all events appear to be the usual ones. What an extraordinary life this is! I can almost tell what is going to happen throughout the day!

Jab Jago Tabhi Savera Translated In English

So what am I getting at? Am I saying that this is a great thing to happen or an unfortunate thing to happen? Well, I am not going to say either of them - so no need to feel excited or depressed. It tells me that we are driving our life on the same fast lane for a long long time. While this pace helps us to reach our destination quickly, but the pace robs us from feeling those minor moments of life. Those moments are there everywhere - like that short burst rain last Sunday, like that man on the road who just appeared from nowhere and asked for help last Wednesday, like those school children who waived at me yesterday morning on their way back from school. If we start paying attention to small details then we can find our life a little less monotonous. Otherwise the extraordinary pace of our life will not leave any trace behind other than those signs of aging.Savera
